Bowie State University Chapters Collaborate On MLK Day of Service

Iota Gamma Omega, Upsilon Tau Omega, and Psi Epsilon Omega and Eta (Bowie State University) Chapters collaborated on our MLK Day of Service over the course of 2 days, starting January 20th, with an MLK Sunday Supper at Benjamin Tasker Middle School in Bowie, MD.

Over 280 attendees joined us in lunch and several workshops focused on health, economic development, and other topics.

On Monday, January 21st they sorted and packed clothing and food donations at the Ivy Youth and Family Center in Suitland, MD.

Xi Omega Sponsors EYL African American History Tour

On Saturday, November 17th Xi Omega Chapter’s Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) went on an African American history tour of Washington, DC. EYL co chairs, Sorors Priscilla Chatman, Vivian Smith and Nancy Chavannes-Battle arranged for their 28 amazing EYLs to go on this educational, fun filled tour under the EYL Education and Civic Leadership Akademies.

The tour started at Cedar Hill, the Fredrick Douglass Home or more appropriately, the mansion which is now managed by the National Park Service. Many of the EYL girls had heard of Fredrick Douglass, but were pleasantly surprised to see that even as a former slave, he lived in a grand elegant home, having amassed a fortune within his lifetime. The girls were very engaged and asked the Park Rangers many questions.

The EYLs then boarded a chartered bus and traveled to the Bethune Cookman statue in Washington, DC’s Lincoln Park. The EYLs walked around the stature reading Bethune's Last Will and Testament inscribed there as Soror Vivian Smith shared Cookman’s accomplishments and how Dorothy Height was responsible for the statue.

The EYL girls were amazed when Soror Vivian Smith shared that Ms. Height had President Lincoln's statue turned around so that his back would not be to Ms. Bethune Cookman. The girls were so proud to learn an African American woman had that kind of power and that she honored a historic African American woman. The next stop was the National Council of Negro Women’s offices on the majestic Pennsylvania Avenue in downtown Washington. This is the only building on Pennsylvania Avenue owned by African American women. Each newly elected president of the United States must march pass this building during the inaugural parade.

After visiting many other sites, the tour ended at the Martin Luther King Jr. Stone of Hope. Wearing our pink EYL polo shirts, the 28 girls and the sorors attracted much attention from the assembled crowds. Someone even asked what type of AKA event was this. That gave us the opportunity to share with him the purpose of the EYL program. The day ended by celebrating Martin Luther King’s mission and that of the AKA, “Service to all mankind.” The EYLs donated 50 non perishable food items for Thanksgiving baskets. This educational, inspirational day was made possible by the participation of hard working sorors: Lori Pemberton, Deborah Allen-Golden, Dana Foney, Sharain Brown Le-Marie Thompson, Yvette Mabrey, Eloise Foster and Frances Bush.

DC Area Chapters Host Candidates Forum, Make Headlines

The Connection Committees of Washington, DC-area chapters Xi Omega and Xi Zeta Omega, Rho Mu Omega made headlines for the joint candidate and issues forum they hosted together this past Sunday.

The three chapters hosted more than a dozen DC candidates for various offices. Attendees were also treated to an informed panel discussion of five experts on issues related to local concerns and our International Initiatives.

More than 115 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha and the general public attended.

In April, the Lambda Tau chapter received the Program of the Year award from the University of Connecticut for its 2-day Human Trafficking Conference. The conference was hosted by the chapter, its graduate chapter, and the UNESCO Office and Institute for Comparative Human Rights (under the leadership of the US UNESCO Chair). The conference brought together organizations from the Women's Center, other Greeks from NPHC, Latino and Multicultural organizations, and faculty and students.

Xi Omega Arbor Day Ceremony To Honor Soror Phyllis Etheridge Young Makes Headlines

Xi Omega Chapter commemorated Arbor Day 2012 with a special tree planing ceremony in honor of former Chapter President Soror Phyllis Etheridge Young.

The youngest of three daughters born to the late Robert Bruce and Bessie Dixon Etheridge, Soror Young became the first African American woman to lead a Federal Highway Administration State Office through her work at the U.S. Department of Transportation. But it was her tireless work as a civil rights and education activist, as well as her later work as an advocate for health and wellness within the community, that truly set Soror Phyllis apart.

Tips to Ensure Wonderful Memories of the San Francisco Boule

As a South Florida native, who had lived several years in both New York and Europe, it never occurred to me that any place, except the North Pole, would be cold in July! Without a thought, I assumed that “Sunny California” would be no different than the warm July weather experienced in other places I had lived. I was totally unprepared for the normal cold weather in San Francisco. The average high temperature for July is 66 and the average low 54, but no rain.

Prior to moving to Maryland, I was a 40 year resident of the San Francisco Bay area where summer is winter. It is cold (winter-like) every evening in the Bay Area and most days in San Francisco. I believe you will enjoy the Boule more if you are not cold all the time or have to spend unplanned money to purchase warm clothing that you could have brought from home.

From my experience, I offer the following suggestions for San Francisco:

Flannel nightgown or pajamas (For 40 years, I slept in flannel except for 1-2 weeks in September.)
Pantsuits, except for required dress, so your legs will be warm - Sweaters both pullover and button
Closed in shoes so your feet are warm - Spring coat or shawl every evening and perhaps daytime, too.
Cap, hoodie or winter scarf for your head for evenings and most mornings
No cotton, silk(only for evening), linen, nylon outfits, including blouses
No sandals
Check Weather.com or your favorite site for the ten day weather report before you pack.

Please share these tips across country so everyone has wonderful memories of the San Francisco Boule regardless of the cold weather and not only reminders of winter in July.

As Mark Twain said, "The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco."
